Stephanie Smithson  Prof. Kiel 2221  8/25/2016  Java Overview  ­ Developed by Sun Microsystems in 1990s → now part of Oracle  ­ Compiler  ­ Checks the source code of a program for errors before running  ­ “Compile­time errors”  ­ If there are no errors, it generates bytecode that is executable in a “.class” file  ­ Execution  ­ JVM: Java Virtual Machine  ­ A virtual compiler that runs on hardware and OS  ­ Loaded by the computer, loads the “.class” file and then interprets the  bytecode before running it one line at a time  ­ Part of JRE: Java Runtime Environment      ­ Significance of JVM  ­ Portable: SO many libraries that are accessible and usable  ­ Universal: Used for many platforms and situations  ­ Performs well across the board, many characteristics and uses  ­ SIMPLE JAVA PROGRAM    ­ This program will print “Hello World” to the console  ­ In this course we will be using the objects SimpleWriter and SimpleReader  ­ import components.simplewriter.SimpleWriter;  ­ import components.simplewriter.SimpleWriter1L;  ­ OR, import components.simplewriter.*;  ­ The * will import all of the libraries  ­ USING SIMPLEWRITER    ­ SimpleWriter can be written out to the console or to a file depending on what is  put into the parameters  ​ ­ Always close the streams so there won’t be errors
