Introduction 8/19/16 Talking about sex • What are some of the factors that could make talking about sexuality uncomfortable? o Class discussion • What could make talking more comfortable/safe? o Listen with an open mind o Be nonjudgmental o Ask any questions; no question is dumb o Participate as much as possible, but share the time o Keep what is said in class CONFIDENTIAL o Pass if you wish and allow others to pass if they wish o Avoid making assumptions about others; if anything, assume diversity Chapter 1 8/19/16 What is sexual intelligence? • Understanding oneself sexually • Having interpersonal sexual skills and integrity o Doesn’t mean you need lots of knowledge, but rather the skill to communicate with your partner about what works and what doesn’t o Help your partner understand what works for you o Also has to do with being true to yourself • Involves having accurate scientific knowledge about sexuality • Includes understanding the broader culture, political, and legal contexts of sexual issues o Example: gays and lesbians have the right to marry each other in every state now
