Sociology Jon Shepard Chapter 3 What is culture? Culture is people’s way of life that is passed from generation. Why is culture important? Culture underlines human social behavior human’s social behavior Culture provides the blueprints people in a society use to guide their relationship. What are norms? Norms are rules defining appropriate and inappropriate behavior. There is different type of norms. o Folkways: the traditional behavior or way of life of a group of people. o Mores: The customs, value and behavior that are accepted by a particular group, culture. o Laws: norms that are formally defined and enforced by officials. What is sanction? Reward and punishment encourage to follow the norms What is Formal Sanction? Sanctions that may be given only by officials such as judged and college professors. Informal sanctions Sanction that can applied by most member of a group. Taboos Prohibited or restricted by social or religious customs. Values Cultural principle that most people in society consider desirable. Why are values important? Values are important because they have a tremendous influence on human behavior. Norms are based on values. They permeate most aspect of daily life. Nonmaterial culture The norms, values, and belief of a group of people. Material culture Consists of the concrete tangible objects with in a culture. Society Composed of people living within defined territorial borders who share a common culture. Multiculturalism Protection of different cultures within a society. Subculture A group that is part of the dominant culture but differs from it in some respect.
