SPEA­V 236 Week 1 Notes Management Concepts and Applications Monday 8/22/16: Reviewed syllabus (which can be found on canvas) Office and Mailbox: SPEA 412 Wednesday 8/24/16: Organizational behavior: the study of behavior in organizational settings. Organization: a deliberate arrangement of people assembled to accomplish some specific  purpose. Organizations are: ­composed of people ­have a deliberate structure ­have a distinct purpose/goal Our goal (in management) is to be able to explain, predict, and change human behavior. Manager: someone who coordinates and oversees the work of other people so that  organizational goals can be accomplished. Technical Skills: knowledge and proficiency in a specific fields. Human Skills: the ability to work well with other people. Conceptual Skills: the ability to think and conceptualize about abstract and complex situations  concerning the organization. Managerial Skills ­top managers need to have good conceptual skills ­lower managers need to have good technical skills ­all managers need to have good human skills Management Functions ­planning, organizing, leading, and controlling ­these all lead to achieving the organization’s stated purposes Planning: setting goals, establishing strategies, and developing plans to coordinate activities Organizing: determining what needs to be done, how it will be done, and who is to do it Leading: motivating, leading, and any other actions involved in dealing with people Controlling: monitoring activities to ensure that they are accomplished as planned Managerial roles ­informational, decisional, and interpersonal Informational: collecting, receiving, and disseminating information Decisional: dealing with decision­making and making choices Interpersonal: dealing with people inside and outside of the organization Google’s top 8 characteristics of a good manager: 1. Be a good coach. 2. Empower your team and don’t micromanage. 3. Be interested in your team member’s success and well being. 4. Be productive and results­oriented. 5. Be a good communicator and listen to your team. 6. Help your employees with career development. 7. Have a clear vision and strategy for the team. 8. Have technical skills so you can advise the team.
