The Study of Sociology (Key ideas/facts are in bold) • Agency: The extent to which our actions are a result of free, unconstrained choice. • Structure: All of the factors that constrain shape, or limit our choices and options for action. Sociology is the study of society, particularly choices and outcomes. “Socius" and “Logos” - The study of society • People doing things together • We are social beings • Our survival is continent on the fact that we live in various groups • Our sense of self derives from our membership in society The accumulated activities that people do together create the patterns and structures we call society The Sociologist’s goal: To understand how humans affect society, as well as how society affects humans. The Sociological Perspective Beginners Mind • We must unlearn what we already know Approaching the world without knowing what we will find • • Being open and receptive Practice being present in the moment (inner stillness) The Sociological Imagination The ability to understand the interplay of self and world • Searching for the link between Micro and Macro levels of analysis • Look for how larger social forces are involved in creating the context of a persons life (race, class, gender etc,..) • Also how individual lives can affect society as well • Abandon and Reevaluate opinions about the world (ability to understand society w/ a different perspective) Private vs. Public Issues Where you fit in public/private issues (How they connect) • Understanding yourself in the historical (social) context you live • Private Issues are solved with psychological answers and solutions • Public Issues are solved with bigger social institutions/Gov structures You must context yourself in your larger social environment in order to recognize how you fit into larger public (social) issues.
