Intro to Biology 107  8/23 Notes    What is life?  For something to be considered alive it must…  1) Acquire and use energy  2) Have one or more cell  3)  ​ rocess information  4) Be capable of replication  5) Be a product of evolution    Levels of Life:  Biosphere  Ecosystem  Community  Population  Organism  Organ  Tissue  Cell  Organelle  Molecule    There are 2 types of life to focus on in biology:  1) Prokaryotes: before nucleus   They include bacteria and archaea  2) Eukaryotes: true nucleus   They include plants, animals, fungi, and protists    Classification:  Kingdom  Phylum  Class  Order  Family  Genus  Species    Tree of Life: family tree of organisms that describe genealogical relationships among  species      8/25 Notes    Why is life so diverse?    Evolution Theory: a change in the characteristics of a population over time called  natural selection  Natural Selection conditions:  1) Individuals must vary in characteristics that are heritable  2) Versions of traits help individuals reproduce more than other traits do  Changes in population occur when humans select which individuals will produce the  most offspring      Types of Sciences    Discovery Science: observations and descriptions of nature  Hypothesis­based Science: tests possible explanations for observations of discovery  science  A Hypothesis must be…  Testable   Falsifiable  And written as a declarative statement      Chemistry    Matter: anything that occupies space and has mass (solid, liquid, and gas)  Elements: cannot be broken down into any simpler substance  Compound: substance consisting of two or more different elements  Nucleus: center of an atom   Proton: positively charged particles found in the nucleus  Neutron: neutrally charged particles found in the nucleus  Electron: negatively charged particles orbiting the nucleus  Atomic Number: equal to number of protons and electrons  Mass Number: number or protons and neutrons  Isotopes: atoms of the same element but with different number of neutrons
