What is Macro Social Work? 1. Definition: The Practice of problem solving and creating change at the community, organization, and societal levels 2. Goals: a. Correct root causes of human suffering b. Raise awareness about injustices c. Better communities and organizational systems in a way that meets their needs 3. Social Problems a. Societal conditions that cause individual problems and are usually engrained in foundational institutions of society b. Ex. Racism, sexism, etc., any form of inequality 4. Proactive vs. Reactive a. If social work tends to be clinical, then theoretically social workers are serving individuals negatively impacted by social issues, rather than eradicating the root causes of those social issues. b. Do you think this is accurate? i. You need both, and macro is equally important c. If so, what are possible long-term effects? 5. A Macro social worker is: a. Change agent! b. Social Activist! 6.
