Botanical Definition – a non-woody plant; can be annual or perennial as long as the stems form no appreciable wood Culinary Definition – leafy parts used for cooking; from temperate regions (e.g. Europe or Mediterranean) What is a Spice? Culinary Definition – non-leafy parts (e.g. roots, bark, fruit) of plants used in cooking; tropical origin What is a Medicinal Plant? Plants valued for their physiological, therapeutic, or psychoactive affects; no specific place of origin (grow in a wide distribution of places) Plant Nomenclature  Formal system of rules for giving scientific names to plants  Most common ranks of scientific names used are family, genus, and species o Ex: Black Pepper  Family  Piperaceae  Genus  Piper  Species  Nigrum  “Officinale” as a species name often means that the plant is used medicinally.
