Biology Chapter 2 (Week2) Notes Kevin Apodaca Part 1 Terms Notes/Definitions Atoms Composed of Protons (+ charge) and Neutrons (no charge) inside Nucleus with Electrons (- charge) revolving around the outside Element Composed of a single type of atom (ex. Carbon & Atomic/Mass numbers The atomic number = number of protons of an atom Mass number = total number of protons + neutrons st The Electron Shells 1ndhell = Max of 2 electrons (ex. Hydrogen) Order 2 shell = Max of 8 electrons (ex. Carbon) 3rdshell = Max of 18 electrons (ex. Sulfur) Molecule Made when two atoms share electrons Octet Rule Atoms will either, lose, gain, or share electrons in order Covalent Bonds Are formed when two atoms share pairs of electrons # of Covalent Bonds  Hydrogen 1  Oxygen 2  Sulfur 2  Nitrogen 3  Carbon 4  Phosphorus 5 Characteristics of  Orientation – length, angle, and direction of bonds Covalent Bonds between any two elements are always the same.  Strength/Stability – lots of energy required to break the bond  Multiple bonds – single (shares 1 pair of electrons) Electronegativity The force that the nucleus exerts on the electrons The less electronegativity (.5ish) the easier it is for Hydrogen Bonds Attraction between Negative and Positive ends of hydrogen molecules (form between water molecules, and Hydro Bonds and Water is a solvent Water Water molecules form hydrogen bonds with each other, leading to high heat capacity Cohesion – when placed under tension, molecules resist coming apart Molecule Hydrophilic – water-loving, attracted to water (polar Characteristics molecules) Ions Electrically charged particles, form when atoms gain or Molecules made from Cations: + charged Atoms interacting Anions: - charged Functional groups: small groups of atoms, have specific Proteins Formed from 20 different combos of amino acids Carbohydrates Sugars, stored energy ATP is an important molecule for energy Nucleic Acid Formed from these four nucleotides (Adenine, Thymine, Lipids Fats and oils in body Condensation Remove water to form a bond Hydrolysis Adding water to break down a bond CONTINUATION CONTINUATION CONTINUATION CONTINUATION CONTINUATION CONTINUATION CONTINUATION CONTINUATION CONTINUATION MOST IMPORTANT POINTS:
