Introduction to Anthropology 1102 Week 1 Anth ­ Four Sub divides  Biology Anthropology  Archeology  Socio­cultural Anthropology  Linguistic Anthropology Biology Anthropology Biology Anthropologist seek to understand how humans adapt too diverse environments & how  biological processes and cultural process work to shape growth, development, and health. They study: Other primates (Primatology), Fossil records (Paleoanthropology), Pre­Historic  people (Bio­archeology), The Biology (health, and genetics of living populations) Example in current field: Jason Michael Kailor­ studying comparative evolution of hair in  primates. Archeology Archeologist study past people’s cultures from pre­historic to the recent past. Through the  analysis of natural evidence such as; pottery, stone tool, animal bones and remains of structures. = all studied to address topics such as the formation of  social groupings, ideologies, subsistence patterns and interactions with the environment. Example in current field: Dana Lepsfshy­ living along coast to identify hoe Natives got along in  environment. (i.e. fishing for food, planting techniques, tools used for hunting and everyday life. Socio­cultural Anthropology  Socio­cultural anthropologist exam social patterns and practices across cultures with interest in  how people live in particular places and how they organize, govern and create meaning. DEFINED BY: It’s a field with emphasis on participant observation (placing yourself in research for extended periods of time) Example in current field: Amrita Parde­ study of surrogate commercial business in India.        = having babies for pay. Linguistic Anthropology Linguistic anthropologist study ways in which language reflects and influences social life. The field: They study language training, they tape record and decode languages across contexts  (social events), take transcripts of interactions (writings), and find grained analysis of  communications. Example in current field: Shahim Shankar­ South Asian children competing to be spelling bee  champions, training early from birth for college applications, and commercial fame, funds.
