Psychology Week 1:  An Introduction to Psychology The remaining document is on the material covered in the 2nd class of the week. The  first class was on going over word for word the syllabus, and if you’re taking this course, you can read it by logging onto your blackboard account. Psychology: The study of human life. What they do: Help people with Psychological problems. What it does: Attempts to explain, predict, and sometimes control what is happening. Psychology has 7 perspectives: Behavioral Psychology:  The idea that Behavior results from learning and  experience. Cognitive Perspective: The idea that Behavior results from mental processes  involved in decision making and problem solving. Evolutionary Perspective: Behavior results from natural selection of  advantageous traits. Human Perspective: Behavior results from free will and the innate need for  selfactualization. Biological Perspective:  Behavior results from genes, the brain, and other  biological processes. Psychodynamic Perspective:  Behavior results from unconscious memories,  conflicts, and desires. Sociocultural Perspective: Behavior results from the social environment  and cultural pressures.  These different perspectives account for why different psychologists that embrace  different views will treat patients differently. While psychologists may favor one view  over the other, it’s important to understand that the problems they encounter aren’t so  black and white. Not a hard science.
