Week 1 – Lecture Notes Key Terms  Geography – study of the earth and how space and things are arranged on earth  Scales – the tool to take a space of the earth to examine  Systems – tools for looking at a specific thing or space on earth Key Ideas  What is the difference between a small scale and large scale map? Small scale maps have a view over a large space with many things in it, not very detailed EXAMPLE: Washington State Large scale maps have a view over a small space with many tiny things in focus, extremely detailed EXAMPLE: Downtown Seattle  What are the 2 types of systems used in Geography? System of Physical Geography studies the land of the earth and things on it EXAMPLE: how did this river get here? Where do the mountains start and end? Why does the Sahara Desert keep expanding and where is it expanding to? Human Geography studies the connection between humankind and the earth EXAMPLE: why are cities located where they are? Why does this certain group speak a different dialect of the same language from another group?  At any point, geography uses 3 questions, what are they? Where is it? Why is it there? How are the places connected?
