Mothers Making Latin America By: O’Connor (NOTES)  Introduction Chapter 1  The military government abducted Aida De Suarez’s son  The Argentine State terrorized their own people from 1976­1979  The terrorization became known as the dirty war  The dirty war started during Isabel Peron’s presidency from 1974­1976  This war established an authoritarian government  The war caused mothers to unite, mothers from all walks of life, religious and political perspectives  Mothers were one of the few groups able to bring international attention to the terrorism in Argentina  Bachelet was the sixth Latin American women to become president who had not been married to a high profile male political leader  Bachelet got Chileans through the hardships of the worldwide economic recession that hit during her term  There was a decline in fertility rates in Latin America   Latin American women were becoming more educated  th  This book will focus on the 19 and 20  centuries mainly after Latin American countries achieved their independence   Wealthy or middle class women were the most likely to take advantage of elite notions of motherhood  Gender as a category for historical analysis, Gender = Social construction that pertains to the ideas a particular society holds about what it means to be a man or women   By adult hood, gender norms often seen as “natural” rather than socially constructed
