Geography 101 Notes Weeks 1­3 8­19­16  What is Geography?  The study of everything  One of the oldest subjects in the world. *Geographers study phenomena across space and over time. Space is the horizontal line on  Earth’s surface.   8­22­16  Climatology­ 30 year average is required to make general remarks about climate.   5 themes of Geography:  Location  Region­ # of different places in one area  Human­Earth Relationships  Place­ where people eat, sleep, stay there, etc.  Movement and weather patterns, ideas, thoughts, etc.  Latitude: angular distance between center of the Earth and a point on the Earth’s  surface.  Parallels  Longitude: Angular distance East or West of a point on the Earth’s surface.   Meridians  Latitude can be estimated using the North Star (Polaris) or Southern Cross.  Longitude can be very tricky.   Latitude is 69.13 miles (111.23 km) between each degree of Latitude.  Longitude varies by latitude.
