Self and Society Actions are weighed by self and social interpretations. Two parts to each personality. o Self o Social Our sense of individuality is a product of our society. Social Facts Have to be objective. External to any individual. Must be measurable. Constrain individual behavior. Durkheim transformed suicide from an individual fact to a social statistic. Durkheim’s Suicide Analysis Suicide rates are relatively constant over time. Suicide rates vary by context. o Theories: Mental Illness? Compared mentally ill to suicide rate. Women – Higher Mental Illness Rate, Lower Suicide Rate Jews – Higher Mental Illness Rate, Lower Suicide Rate Ethnicity? Compared ethnic groups and suicide rates. o Rates vary more within rather than between ethnic groups. Temperature? In every society, suicide rates are higher in summer. Found no correlation between temperature and suicide rate. Religion? Context Suicide Rates Predominantly Protestant 190 per million Mixed Prot/Cath 96 per million Predominantly Catholic 58 per million Predominantly Jewish 40 per million Social Integration o A variable. o Social Groups vary in the extent to which: …they integrate individuals into the collective body. …Group vs Individual is Emphasized …the group is internally unified or fragmented. The more integrated the group, the lower the suicide rate. People draw their strength from the community. Less integrated people are less reliant on the community. o People who are married with kids have lower suicide rate. o Political unrest shows lower suicide rate. o Too much integration will raise suicide rate. To the point of exclusion of self. “Altruistic Suicides” Social Regulation o Social groups vary to the extent they regulate: …passions/dreams/desires. …ambitions. …roles. …expectations. o Suicide rates went up during times of change.
