Academic Definition- The process by which individuals pursue opportunities without regard to resources currently controlled. Venture Capitalist Definition- The art of turning an idea into a business. What do entrepreneurs do? - Assemble and integrate resources needed (money, people, business model, strategy) to transform an invention or idea into a viable business. Entrepreneurship includes-  Risk of personal loss  Growth Oriented  Startup Experience Characteristics of Successful Entrepreneurs-  Passion for your venture  Tenacity despite failure  Customer Focus  Execution intelligence Debunking Entrepreneur Myths  #1- Entrepreneurs are born - not made. o Research consensus is that no one is genetically predisposed to become an entrepreneur o It’s a function of environment, experience and choice  #2- Entrepreneurs are gamblers o Endure moderate risk o Because they are more positive - often view ideas as less risky than they really are  #3- Entrepreneurs are motivated primarily by money o Money is rarely the reason entrepreneurs start new ventures (some say it is a distraction)  #4- Entrepreneurs are young and energetic o Spread out over all ages fairly, uniformity  #5- Entrepreneurs love the spotlight o How many can you name? (founders of Netflix, YouTube, etc.)
