Week 2 notes  Reaction order o For the reaction The rate law is Where n is equal to the order of the reaction  If n=0 , the reaction is zero order and the rate is independent of the concentration of A  If n=1, the reaction Is first order, and the rate is directly proportional to the concentration of A  If n=2, the reaction is second order, and the rate is proportional to the square of the concentration of A To find the overall reaction order you multiply the exponents in the equation  Determine the order of reaction 1. Write the generic rate law 2. Take the first rate law and divide by another rate law 3. Plug in values from the tables(k will cancel out because it is the rate constant) 4. Decide what order the reaction is 5. Find K  Plug one column of the data into the rate law equation  Solve for the unknown Examples from the powerpoint [A] Initial Rate (M) (M/s) 0.10 0.015 0.20 0.030 0.40 0.060 Learning Check (Group Quiz) Expt . Initial Initial Initial Rate # [A], (M) [B], (M) (M/s) 1. 0.20 0.50 3.5 x 10 -5 2. 0.40 1.00 1.4 x 10 -4 3. 0.40 0.50 1.4 x 10 -4
