Psychomyths – common beliefs that are not based on evidence  Ex: Sugar & Hyperactivity in children  Ex: Only using 10% of the brain Where Do Psychomyths Come From?  Hunches, first impressions and personal intuitions  Repetition (continuing to repeat a hunch or impression one has on something) can be widely accepted as… “Common Sense”  Ex: “Safety in Numbers” – Data from Darley & Latane (1968), “In emergencies, bystanders will be less likely to help if more people are present.” Confirmation Bias - (“Seek and you shall find”) Ignoring the information that will disprove what they believe (don’t want to hear)  Only looking for what you want to see  Ex: Sugar and hyperactivity in children – parents don’t look to disprove claim, only to prove Hindsight Bias – (“I knew it all along”) Believing you predicted an incident after it has already occurred Apophenia – (“clutter illusion”) Seeing trend that isn’t really there  Ex: “Hot hand effect” in basketball; shooting streaks Pareidolia – Seeing a meaningful image that is not really there  Ex: face on mars Cognitive biases hinder our ability, so we need scientific studies in order to understand.
