CLASS NOTES th September 8 , 2016 Importent Terms Diegesis – subtitles and voiceovers Extra Diegetic- includes cultural attitudes/ (we the player matter) (real world person) Diegetic- the player in the game Notes on the Article Designers are/need to be educated on the culture on which they are making/creating in the game. What are urban video games really teaching us about different races? 31 year-old college graduate white males making multiracial games for white consumers Need to have access to the technology, money, internet speed, and the knowledge in order for this to change Pair Report Notes American Exceptionalism Belief that America and history is different from other nations and is exempt from normal rules and principles i.e. Thomas Payne, Mark Twain, Woodrow Wilson, etc.… All believe that America was different and it should spread throughout the world Linked to Bioshock -> to the lvl where people don’t see what they are doing is wrong. i.e. The Giver, The Hunger Games Developers portraying American Exceptionalism? It’s a part of our country and we view ourselves as better than everyone else, but it has been the driving force of America itself. Also, tied in with Comstock and how he was trying to control everyone and just Columbia in general. American Exceptionalism correct? Not entirely, but it has been a valuable asset. It was correct at one point, time, it has twisted into what we wanted it to be and use it as justification to do unjust things. Battle of Wounded Knee Ghost dance -> To bring back dead warriors to push back the white movement Was seen as a threat from the 7 Calvary and then went to investigate, a gun misfired and then fighting broke out which in then, turned into a slaughter. th Booker was part of the 7 Calvary and identified by slate a true soldier Slate sent in his men to die a real death rather than by “tin-men” Booker feels bad about what he had done, but he couldn’t do anything about it later on.
