Chapter 3  Range: high score-low score  Variance: used as a concept  Standard Deviation: square root of the variance o Used most often for calculations  o ∑= used for populations o µ=used for samples  Standard deviation can never be negative o You can see this from the formula (because it’s squared) o The smallest a deviation can ever be is zero  Would only be possible if there was no spread (range)  EX:  Empirical rule o Only applies to bell-shaped graphs o 68% of observations lie within one standard deviation of mean o 95% of observations lie within two standard deviations of mean o 99.7% of observations lie within three standard deviations of mean  Measures of position: determines position of a single value in relation to other values in a sample/population data set o Quartile: summary measures that divide a ranked set into 4 equal parts  Q1 (first quartile), Q2 (second quartile), Q3 (third quartile) 
