Atomic Structure ­ Nucleus: the central part of the atom o Protons: positive electrical charge o Neutrons: neutral electrical charge ­ Electron Shell o Surrounds the nucleus o Contains electrons, which have a negative electrical charge Atomic Number ­ Number of protons and neutrons contained in the nucleus  Ions ­ Positively or negatively charged atoms due to the gain or loss of an electron Elements ­ Building blocks of minerals ­ Defined by the number of protons and neutrons or its Atomic  Number. ­ Groups of same types of atoms Ionic Bonding ­ Transfer of electrons from one atom to another. Covalent Bonding ­ Electrons are shared between two atoms Valence Shell ­ The atoms outermost shell Octet Rule ­ The valence shells maximum amount of electrons it can contain is  eight. ­ Electrons will be lost, shared, and transferred until the maximum is reached. Properties of Minerals ­ Habit: the common crystal shape, can have more than one  crystalline habit ­ Luster: the appearance of the metal in reflected light ­ Color o This varies from metal to metal, so it is considered an  unreliable identifier. ­ Streak: Color of mineral in powdered form ­ Hardness: the ability to resist scratching ­ Cleavage: the tendency to break along places of weak bonding Physical Properties of Minerals ­ Fracture: the random patterns of breakage ­ Specific gravity: the minerals density ­ Tenacity: the resistance to cutting, breaking, bonding and  deformation Other Properties ­ Taste ­ Smell ­ Elasticity ­ Malleability ­ Double refraction ­ Magnetism ­ Feel ­ Reaction to hydrochloric acid
