Biology 110 Chapter One Hypothesis-Driven Science: -The Scientific Method consists of a series of steps; -Observation -Question -Hypothesis -Prediction -Experiment -Hypothesis- a tentative answer to a question; a hypothesis must be testable and must be able to be proven wrong. -Scientific Theory- broader than a hypothesis and is a comprehensive explanation supported by abundant evidence. Theories in Science -Theories only become accepted by scientists if: 1. Are supported by an accumulation of extensive and varied evidence 2. Have not been contradicted by any scientific data -When does a theory get proven wrong? When there is more evidence going against it. The Three Domains of life -Bacteria -Archaea -Eukarya Bacteria and Archaea have prokaryotic cells- (does not have a nucleus) Eukarya have eukaryotic cells- (has a nucleus) -Bacteria has four basic components: 1. Plasma membrane 2. Ribosomes 3. Cytoplasma 4. DNA Major Themes in Biology Five unifying themes will serve as touchstones throughout our investigation of Biology; 1.Evolution 2.Structure/Function 3.Information Flow 4.Energy Transformations 5.Interconnections within systems -Evolution- the process of change that has transformed life on earth; changes via natural selection Information Flow -for life’s functions to proceed in an orderly manner, information must be stored, transmitted, and used - all cells use DNA as the chemical material of genes that transmit info from parent to offspring. DNA has four molecular building blocks: -A, G, C, T -The entire set of genetic information that an organism inherits is called genome. The nucleus of each human cell contains a genome that is about 3 billion chemical letters long. Energy Transformations: Pathways That Transform Energy and Matter -Various cellular activities of life are work, such as movement, growth, and reproduction, and work requires energy. -life is made possible by: 1. The input of energy, primarily from the sun 2. The transformation of energy from one to another Interconnections within Biological Systems Molecules and atoms – organelles – Cells – Tissues – Organs and Organ Systems – Organisms – Populations – Communities – Ecosystems - Biospheres
