Art history Aug 31 Todays Lecture Topic : Post War Paris Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jean-Paul Sartre 1946  Face of existential ideology  He wrote a few different novels/books  You constantly have to choose, you can’t escape this, condemned to choose Key things of existential philosophy  Authenticity, freedom, being-for-others, and choice  Existence precedes essence  Ethics: accountability in postwar European cultures, Not nihilism  You don’t choose until you are forced to choose, everything can be situational  If you aren’t owning your choices, then you are an awful person/dick John Dubuffet  His work looks like intentional children’s drawings  He is a self taught artist  Dubuffet, View of Paris: 1944  Dubuffet, Apartment Houses: 1946  Dubuffet, Woman Grinding Coffee:1945  Created his own medium called haute pate, made of cans of everyday house paint, putty, glue, it had a thick mud-like texture that he would apply to the canvas and then he inscribes on-top of it.  Liked to talk about the uncomfortable things; blood, shit, semen, etc.  Direct and raw, pushes boundaries  Switches to abstract, texture work, stops doing portraits  Started calling his style of art; Art Brute: “crude” or “raw” art, outsider art, a new primitivism  He had many series, one was called Texturology  Dubuffet, The Exemplary Life of the Soil (Texturology LXIII): 1958, done with things like sand and dirt, pure abstract art Jean Fautrier  Did the Head of Hostage series.  Fautrier, Head of Hostage, N. 22: 1944  He kind of broke himself, he had a trauma so strong he struggled to not go crazy, constantly heard screaming of torture  He would use a similar putty material but then he would brutalize it, stabbing it, cutting it, burning it, pounding it,  For Jean, the material was an input for human flesh  Fautrier, The Jewess: 1943  Eventually the become gendered (female), and then they become every more idealized, (Jewish)  Does this work for nearly 20 years  Formless: related to the abject (base, degrading, blood, shit, death) The abject is a term developed to relate to the idea of formless. “the two terms are related but not identical”  The idea of formless was owned and come by Georges Bataille. Wols  When the was broke out he was imprisoned as an enemy alien, he made a body of work in prison and that’s what he is famous for  He commits suicide in 1951, drinks himself to death  Wols, Butterfly Wings (1947), very delicate, done in a wash and smudge abstract standard  His statement says that his works represent the universal horror of being in the world Germaine Ritchier  Sculpture artist  Where paintings went abstract, sculpture went towards figure and accuracy  Ritchier, Diabolo: 1950, put natural materials into the sculptures, makes them look near dead, broken  Wants to give a sense of not only broken bodies but the bodies being taken over by nature  Usually shows degeneration and decay, returning to nature Alberto Giacometti  Swiss artist, left Paris and went back to Switzerland during the war, comes back to his studio in Paris after the war  During the war he did small scale human sculptures (one inch tall)  Gets to Paris and then takes the small models and makes the big  Alberto Giacometti, The Couple :1927, before the war, modernistic  Giacometti, Suspended Ball: 1930, work stays simple, is about sexually intercourse  Giacometti, Woman with her Throat Cut: 1932, very intense misogynistic feeling going on in this time, make awful things towards woman  After war his art shifts drastically  Giacometti, Hand: 1947, very drastic, looks dead and decayed, many thought it was supposed to be people that died in the war but it was more directed toward the kind of people that we dealt with after the war that survived but were very thin and sick.
