Developmental Psychology Week 3 Notes  Language Development o Sound Discrimination  6­8months: can discriminate sounds from other language (h in hat vs c in cat)  10­12months: can discriminate only familiar sounds (video of baby being able to  distinguish sounds that older people couldn’t) o Timeline of long acquisition  Word Comprehension (~9months) begins before production (~10­13m)  Babbling= consonant  Cooing= vowel sounds  9m­ imitation  Vocab spurt occurs around 18m  By age 2: 1000­2000 words  By age 6: 14,000 words  How many words do we have? 20,000­60,000 o 3 challenges of language  Segment the speech stream: know where words stop and start  Assign meaning  Figure out a grammar: rules for how you put words together  Speech segmentation errors example: song lyrics we mess up o Narrowing Field  Whole object constraint: talking about whole thing, not just part.  Taxonomic constraint: categories­ “dog” for all kinds of dogs  Problem: call cats or anything furry a dog  Mutual exclusivity constraint: everything has one label  Child knows the word “bottle” and the object. When shown a bottle and a  rattle they are told to give the “modi” to the person. They will give the  rattle because they know that the other object is a bottle and they don’t  know what the other object is.  Movie with sub o Four girls with difficult pregnancies o According to a 70 yearlong study, being born in the wet season leads to a longer life o The oldest member in the village is 90 yo and was born in the wet season o Melanie had a t­763 change in the gene, never before seen in medicine: teeth, hair, and  skin were affected o Despite her condition, she would not want to go back in time and change who she is o 9 months and 2 weeks is the time it takes for humans to be created o Fathers genes make us big and strong o Mothers genes restrict how big we are because she is carrying the baby o Nel is 7yo and she produces hormones that cause her to grow and become big. This is  because she received two genes from her father o Randy a former NBA player has his heart on the right side and his liver on the left side.
