Week 1 Readings in Literature and Culture II Dr. Holly Jones The Captivity of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson Removes 1-7 - Remove 1: o Mary Rowlandson has been captured by Native Americans in King Philip’s War o Herself and her child have been shot - Remove 2: o Begin traveling into the wilderness o Camped overnight in the snow - Remove 3: o Going to an indian town to see “King Philip” o Met Robert Pepper, who told her to put oaken leaves in her wound o The baby died- Rowlandson grieved very little o One indian gave her a bible o Visited her daughter Mary - Remove 4: o Travelled for four days - Remove 5: o Drinks horse broth o Confliction between pagans and Rowlandson over Sabbath - Remove 6: o Crossed a brook o Came to an indian town - Remove 7: o Hikes through the swamp o Eats horse liver It is very clear of the religious tone of this narrative. Rowlandson believes that, because she is a Christian woman, she is far more righteous than the natives, who she repeatedly calls “heathens”.
