Warren 1 Jacob Warren Ian Liu WPC 101 #79526 1 September 2016 My Sun Devil Story My Sun Devil Story starts before I was born. Both of my parents grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and attended Arizona State University. They met in college and eventually got married and later, I came along. I grew up in Chandler, Arizona and have lived there all eighteen years of my life. The area I lived in was very diverse and this helped me throughout my life and will continue to pay dividends. I didn’t recognize until I was older, but where I grew up was racially diverse. I started to realize this situation in junior high school, where 65% of the students were Hispanic. I considered this as a great opportunity because I was able to learn more about a different culture than my own. In high school, I realized that not all places in our city were similar. In other high schools, almost 80% of the school was Caucasian. I was happy to know I was able to grow up in an area with diversity, so I could learn about different cultures. Throughout my life, I had always believed that receiving a higher education was necessary. I knew all the benefits of going to a college or university. I would be guaranteed a better career as long as I worked hard to achieve it. A higher education would also help me become a better student, as I would pick up skills during college that I wouldn’t have with only a high school diploma. Since I was born into a family of Sun Devils, I was naturally always a supporter of the university. I especially enjoyed the excitement that athletics brought to ASU. From a young age, I would attend the ASU vs. U of A football games every year. As a result, my liking for ASU and my hatred for U of A grew stronger every year. When it came time to choose which university I would be attending after high school, the only school I applied to was ASU. I made this decision based in my passion for the Sun Devils and the lure of the W.P. Carey School of Business. I knew my desire was to attend a business school and when I heard ASU’s business school was one of the top schools in the country, I chose to commit to coming to Tempe. When selecting a major for the first time, I was quite unsure of which path to take. There were many great options, but I really had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. Other thank knowing I wanted to be in the business school, I really hadn’t given it much thought about what I wanted to study. I narrowed my options down to Economics, Finance, and Sports and Media Studies. I thought all three of these were great choices, but I eventually chose Finance because this subject is interesting and I believe everyone should know the basics of how to manage money. I chose to come to the business college because I believe this will be the most relevant subject in my working life. I think it is smart to collect business skills before going out into the real world. I think everyone needs these skills, not just people who work for giant corporations. Everything in the working world is related to business, so getting a business degree was a top priority for me. The industry is monstrous because money flows in and out of every single person’s hand on a daily basis. It is key that I learn as much as I can in my four years at Arizona State. I bring many strengths that can benefit me, as well as, other people. Whether, it means working by myself or in groups, I always try to be as productive as I can to assure that myself or my group can have as much success as possible. One of my biggest strength would be listening. This is specifically a skill used in groups. When working in groups, I always try my best to absorb as much information as possible, so that I can better respond to others’ ideas or comments. Another strength I have is work ethic. When I receive an assignment, I try to figure out what needs to be done and how it needs to be completed as soon as I can. I enjoy the satisfaction of working hard to complete a project. Even though I have strengths, there are plenty of weaknesses I need to address, while receiving my degree. I came to college so I could improve my learning and my skill set before I start my career. A major part of coming to college was to learn how to take in new information. Another goal of mine is to improve my leadership abilities. I know employers look for this skill in new hires and I want companies to know that I can effectively lead a team when necessary. I also want to learn what interests me during my college experience. If I don’t choose to pursue finance, I want to be excited about something else. I want to enjoy college, but at the same time, gain enough knowledge that my experience here at Arizona State University can launch me into my next step in life.
