Week 1: Notes Definitions: Career: occupation taken for a long period of time in a person’s life with opportunities to  progress. Profession: a paid occupation that involves prolonged training and formal qualifications. Trade: Skill job, typically requires manual skills and special training. Basic facts about Heath Professions 1) The career you are studying will likely change by the time you graduate. 2) Your work will change constantly during your lifetime. 3) The only consistent thing about health care is the way it changes.  What will change? 1) The science 2) Technology/imaging 3) Laws/rules/regulations 4) Expectations(statistics) 5) Method of practice or doing business 6) New diseases 7) New cures/surgeries/pharmaceuticals  8) New careers  What wil   n  change? 1) Patients will die 2) Responsibility will be enormous 3) You will second guess yourself 4) You may take things home in your head 5) You will see miracles 6) You may get emotional rewards ~ We have many different kinds of teams in the healthcare industry. What is Healthcare?  ­ Maintenance and improvement of one’s physical and mental health through medical  services.  Usually implies treatment and prevention   General areas of Healthcare: 1) Face to face/direct patient contact= a) Physician b) Nurse/Aide c) OT/PT d) Dentist/ Hygienist e) X­ray tech 2) No face to face/ direct contact: a) Lab tech b) Art therapy c) Administration/medical records d) Housekeeping  e) Pharmacy  What we face: ~ the two main leading causes of death are Heart disease(614,348) and cancer(591,699), but life  expectancy has gone up with the improvement of medicine. Challenges: 1) Cost/insurance/politics 2) Resistant infections 3) World travel: the passing of infections between countries 4) Autism 5) Pollution/ radiation 6) Life expectancy/ end of life care 7) Adequate primary care 8) Power and politics ~ people who are elected to pass and create bills and laws for healthcare most of the time  don’t know anything about health care to adequately know what is best for everyone.   Usually they promote the health care institution that provides the most money to them or  promotes them during election periods.
