THEA 221: History of Theatre and Drama to 1600 Oedipus by Sophocles Play Notes ­Sophocles • Born: c. 497/6 • Died: d. 406/5 • Lived to be around 90! ­Sophocles enables us to zero in on a particular emblem or hero a.k.a. Oedipus. ­Oedipus: the king ­ We gesture toward troubling universality. ­Major Competitor • Wrote c. 123 plays • c. 7 survive • Won c. 25 competitions at the festival of dionyus ­ The most of all the major tragedians. • The festival of dionyus is like the Olympics for ex. in the sense of playwrights. ­Aristotle is deemed Sophocles an innovator of scene painting. ­Sophocles really defines the dialogue and subtext and psychological fallout. • Able to pay attention to the scene. ­Aristotle helps us to understand what Sophocles was doing. ­Aristotle’s Poetics Are Tragedy’s: a set of actions used separately through the play. ­Embellished Speech: rhythm and melody a.k.a. song, by with the elements separately  are accomplished by spoken verses and means of song. ­The viewer is definitely impacted by the tragedy of Oedipus. ­Six key elements of tragedy: • Plot (structure of incidents) • Character (with an array of traits) • Thought (reasoning that is spoken) • Diction (quality of speech) a mod of specking • Melody (song/poetry) • Spectacle (the sensory elements) a spectacular element  ­Key elements/plot points: • The Riddle of the Sphynx: is about fate. • A detective story: who killed Oedipus biological father Laius a.k.a. the king. • Key sense­metaphor in the play: sight and hearing or the absence thereof, the paradox  of removing his own sight; hearing is auditory, really understanding what you are  hearing. ­Key Notices of the unfolding of the play Oedipus: • Kreon: didn’t want him sharing power with Oedipus. • Tiresias: Oedipus pushes him to speak of something that doesn’t want to be spoken. • Jocasta: motherly by the way she comforts her husband Oedipus who is her biological  son that to her knowledge he was killed by a shepherd, she’s in denial about her son  Oedipus prophetess. • Oedipus: his confrontation with the truth and the disaster that occurs from the truth  coming to life/ being told. He referrers to the people as his children. Brings up huge  philosophical points that its either this or this no in­between, man has limits and you  need a larger/wider sense of view.  • All of Thebes is at stake because Oedipus killed his father the king and lied. ­Themes:  • The symbolic power of leadership. • Fate is inescapable. • Death is yet to come. • Control of human nature. • Divergency of gods and the prophecies. • Morals of situations: what happens so we can apply the notions/code of the way to live. • Cultural habit: to not sleep with your children, Oedipus is doing something sophisticated  by making it clear that the infraction is a conscious decision it can represent the larger implications of fallout. 2    Fait: is what will befall us eventually. 3
