METACOGNITION ↳Ability to think about thinking, know about knowing FIXED MINDSET GROWTH MINDSET ↳You can’t get any better, what ↳All about yet, With more work & effort You have is what you have abilities can change, find ways to improve Not as afraid to try More likely to give up EFFECTIVE LEARNING (PSYCHOLOGY IN ACTION) How mindset is established… Appreciate the effort not the result Praise effort→From childhood mindset is influenced by parents, friends, and teachers ✴You learn what to expect from the way they responded to your success and failures✴ MULTITASKING IS AN ILLUSION… We can only focus on 1 thing at a time, the conscious brain works sequentially. You can’t do 2 controlled activities simultaneously. You can do an automatic and a controlled activity. Like walking and breathing ✴IF YOU TRY TO DO 2 CONTROLLED AT ONCE: ● Takes longer to do the same amt. of work (Inefficient) ● Error rates are higher (Inefficient) Really it is “Shifttasking” not multitasking WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR STUDY STUDENTS 1. Focus on 1 subject at a time 2. Phone on silent 3. No tv 4. Music varies (instrumental is okay) MEMORY STRATEGIES HELP 1. Repetition (simplest) works but is not the most efficient ✴INSTEAD: ● Make it meaningful Called Elaboration Elaboration is making a connection to things you already know ● Use “tricks” Song, rhyme,etc ● Overlearning ● Mix it up! Don’t study in order you will only think you know the material ● Use OrganizationStructureVisualizations (Flashcards) THE VALUE OF QUIZZING “The Testing Effect” ✴Research shows you learn more by studying and quizzing than just studying. ✴ Practice retrieving info Dont just review Quiz yourself Teach others ✴DISTRIBUTIVE PRACTICE When it comes to learning 1+1+1>3 ● You learn more if it is spread out ● Review multiple times over multiple days ● Cramming feels good but it is not very effective The one who does the most work does the most learning… ACTIVE READING STRATEGIES HELP Dont treat textbook like a novel Should you reread? Don’t reread, it will be more productive to quiz Should you highlight? Depends how you highlight, in a meaningful way then yes! ✴THE BRAIN DOES BETTER WITH (Egodepletion recharge) ● Good food ● Good exercise ● Good sleep THE BRAIN DOES WORSE WITH ● TOO MUCH STRESS Most problematic? stress without a break feeling no control There is an optimal level.. Use coping skills, time management, mediation etc to get there ✴RULE OF SELF REGULATION ↳Ability to manage own emotions and behavior Includes: impulse control ability to delay gratification People have different amts… those tend to do better in life ✴EGO DEPLETION MODEL OF SELF REGULATION We have a set amt. (until recharged) Use it early= Struggle later ✴GOOD NEWS! You can train (get more) You can learn to avoid temptation when necessary SET THE STAGE FOR SUCCESS Build more (practice selfcontrol, less stress, more rest) Change environment to help at high risk times (if you have trouble saying no to temptation) EX: control me app ✴ROLE OF EFFICACY ↳The belief one can be or will be successful All else equal those that believe that they can.. Are more likely to People vary on this… you can get more HOW? 1. Masteryafter achieving one goal and gaining success each accomplishment after is like a snowball effect and confidence builds & 2. TEST ANXIETY ↳An inability to show what you know ( choking under pressure) Assuming you really did know ✴Exists but not as much as most think ✴What can be done? 1. Study more 2. Learn to shut down the anxiety (Gotta practice)
