Ch. 2: Leadership Function of Leadership:  Leadership-- ability to inspire  Not all managers can be leaders  Leaders need to do o Establish the mission-- help propel the organization forward o Motivating stakeholder's-- want everyone to be invested in this effort o Effective Spokesperson-- need to be an effective communicator o Determine communication strategies-- how are we going to communicate to other stakeholder's o Help transform organization through culture-- setting the tone for the internal culture for the organization (that's how you change it from the inside out) o Networking  How do you determine a leader in the organization? o A lot of leadership is unofficial & management is aware of this, but may not say anything unless something goes wrong  If something goes wrong w/ that leader you go back to the policies & procedures & redirect  Leadership Styles: o Coercive-- power based; a person that is going to do it because of power; power hungry people  Power is used inappropriately to get a desired response from a follower  Should only be used if the leader is dealing w/ a very problematic subordinate or is in an emergency situation & needs immediate action. o Participated-- the leader gets you to participate and give input feedback for some decisions  Have to know where to draw the line because some decisions should not involve your employees, but need to be made at the executive level or without feedback. o Pace-Setter-- the ones that raise the bar, hyper productive, high performance standards  Jack of all trades, master of none. There will be a quality issue at some point o Coaching-- person that is there to help everyone, solve everyone's problems Barriers that can Prohibit you from being an effective leader:  Gender bias/Women in top leadership positions (Barrier)  Physicians (Challenge)  Laws & regulations (Barrier)  Culture of safety (Challenge)  New technology (Barrier)  Value- based purchasing (Challenge)  Ethics o Your ethics o Bio ethics-- doing right vs wrong in regards to a patient  Something that needs to be considered in R&D, medical procedures & advancements (aka cloning)
