Medical Anthropology A specialization that brings theoretical and applied approaches from cultural and biological anthropology to the study of human health and disease A Medical system is a patterned set of ideas and practices relating to illness There are many different types Like western medicine set ideas and practices and we have doctors and nurse To be part of this field then has to have a lot of knowledge Traditional may look different but have people who have studied for a long time to get better The foundation is similar Medical Pluralism Presence of multiple medical systems each with its own practices and beliefs in a society Most individuals can reconcile different medical systems Medicine pluralism may become more necessary in areas of public health Some people have to turn to other medical systems sometimes one does not work sometimes not allowed sometimes it is not enough lack of access as well There are alternative medical systems Structural Violence Marginalized Society seems to be divided between groups who have access to care and some who do not Physical andor psychological harm caused by exploitative and unjust social political and economic systems Repression environmental destruction poverty hunger illness and premature death This is invisible but author makes it visible But we might not see the causes Person is sick with tumors and might call it God s sickness shorthand for natural sickness Different illnesses are categorized by either natural or sorcery f sorcery then it may relate to culture and so goes to pray but if natural then would need to go to clinic Find doctors with both hands that sees the two types of sickness being natural or unnatural Theoretical Framework Power and Scale Throughout world history particular individuals driven by the natural human desire to accumulate social power have promoted growth which has amplified many human problems by socializing the costs of development and disproportionately concentrating the benefits Does not necessary see the cause but sees the impact
