Week 2: Orgo Notes Hannah Malcomson Carbon can bond in three different ways: Single bonds- alkane Double bonds- alkene Triple bonds- alkyne Hybridized Orbitals: 3 sp hybridized- tetrahedral o all 3 p- orbitals are mixed with the s- orbital o all single bonds one sigma (∂) bond in a single bond, no π bonds o all bond angles are = 109° o All 2 ndrow atoms w/ all single bonds are sp hybridized sp hybridized- trigonal planar o one double bond one ∂ bond in a double bond, one π bond o flat- bond angle = 180 OR 120 sp- hybridized- linear o one triple bond one ∂ bond in a triple bond, two π bond o bond angle= 180 Solubility- organic compounds and water Ionic bonds- any compounds with a charge will be soluble in water, as water is a polar molecule
