Thursday, September 1, 2016 Unit 2A: God & Science Science, Compatibility and Strategy - Background issues • Logical Compatibility and Incompatibility
Two or more statements are logically compatible when it is possible for them to both be true. They need not actually be true. • Are These “Logically Compatible”?
 a. The various statements of knowledge that SCIENCE makes - e.g., about the nature of the universe, the nature of living organisms, etc.
 b. The various statements of belief that THEISM makes - e.g., about the origin of the universe, the origin of life, etc. • Science Explanation
Method of Scientific Inquiry: Science proceeds empirically - thus, the term “Empirical science”.
Science explains natural processes, but nothing supernatural
Science explains the workings of physical objects
 - Preliminary Case for Incompatibility • Scientism
The view that empirical science can explain every aspect of existence - i.e., given enough time for science to study everything.
Suppose we assume that science will eventually explain everything.
In that case, everything there is, is something science explains.
That is, everything involves natural processes and physical objects. • Natural Materialism
 1. Naturalism - the view that only natural processes (but not supernatural processes) are at work in our universe.
 2. Materialism - the view that all existing objects are material/physical objects
1 Thursday, September 1, 2016 - “NOMA” Strategies forAchieving Compatibility • First Causes vs. Second Causes
First causes are the initial, supernatural creative acts of God in making the universe.
Second causes are the ongoing natural forces that empirical science discovers - i.e., laws of nature. • How Vs. Why • Facts vs. Values
Factual statements are descriptions of how things are.
Value statements are evaluative judgements about what thing/people/actions are better than others - i.e., about how things should be. Science and Capital Punishment
 • What Science Can Contribute:
 - Help find a speedy method of killing.
 - Help find a reliable method of killing.
 - Help find a more pain-free method.
 What Science Cannot Contribute:
 - Cannot tell us whether capital punishment is moral acceptable.
 Galileo’s SuggestionsAbout Scripture Interpretation
 - The primary intention of the author is what matters.
 - Where scripture is unclear on an issue pertaining to science, science should be allowed to resolve it.
 - Literal interpretations are not always the best.
