Nina McCoy 9/13/16 Sociology 101 Notes Chapter 1  Sociology- systematic study of human society The major part of sociology is the sociological perspective  Sociological perspective- Sociologists help shape public policy like laws and regulations  Sociological Theory- theory- how and why facts are related  Structural-Functional Approach- Framework for building theory that sees society as a complex system  Social conflict approach- Race, sex, age for inequality -conflict and change  Gender-conflict theory- focuses on inequality and conflict between women and men  Race conflict theory- Inequality and conflict between races  Symbolic-interaction- Meanings symbol like waving hello *C. Wright Mills- He believed that society, not people, are the main cause of poverty and other social problems -Personal problems into social issues *August Comte (1798-1857)- Father of sociology -Introduced positivism -Saw sociology as product of the three historical stages Theorists- Comte, Durkheim, Spencer, Marton, Weber, Mead, Goffman Three ways to do sociological research:  Positive sociology- Study of society based on scientific observation of social behavior  Interpretive sociology- Study that focuses on discovering meaning of people(culture)  Critical sociology- Focuses on the need for social change  Correlation- Two or more variables that work together  Cause and effect- One variable that causes change in others  Variable- Vary from case to case  Descriptive statistics- “average” state for large population(USA) Most commonly used- Mean, median, mode  Validity- Measures exactly what intend to measure  Reliability- Consistency in measure, same results repeated  Research methods- plan for doing research  Experiments- Pro- easily replicated, controlled by you Con- unnatural setting  Surveys- Pros- large number of results, test people’s values Con- people can lie  Participant observations- Pros- first hand experiment Con- not reliable  Existing sources- Pro- work already done Con- someone else’s work  Observations- Pro- don’t need approval, natural setting Con- no asking questions, remain objective Ten steps in sociological research:  What is your topic?  What have others already learned?  What, exactly, are your questions?  What will you need to carry out research?  What might the research cause harm?  What method will you use?  How will you record the data?  What does the data tell you?  What are your conclusions?  How can you share what you learned?
