Kara Walker was an artist who evolved in the late 1900’s. One of her pieces is titled, “Pastoral”. This piece was made in 1998. It is a wall painting in black, accompanied by a stencil. This piece of artwork is approximately 72 by 76 inches. “Pastoral” is a silhouette painting. Kara Walker was most famous for her silhouette paintings. This silhouette painting is worth a lot of money, almost 30,000 dollars. It can be interpreted in many different ways. I like this piece of artwork due to the fact that it can be interpreted in many different ways. I first saw it as a woman who had an umbrella squatting down on a hill. But I could also see it as an Indian with a beautiful headpiece, or a tree with roots that are not firm in the ground. That is the beauty of art, being free and open for interpretation. Behind every art piece, is a story, a lesson. After writing these research paragraphs and going back to read more information about the painting, it is actually supposed to represent slavery and violence and inhumanity. It is supposed to depict a young woman with a slaughtered sheep on her shoulders. Every person views art pieces differently based on their history and background.
