Lesson 7 Class Notes: Energy from Organic Molecules Part 1      ATP  ● Energy currency of cell  ● Hydrolysis produces ADP and P    ATP Cycle  ● ATP synthesis energy input from exergonic reactions  ● 1st reaction: Endergonic   ● Temporary energy currency; pick up energy and invest somewhere else  ● ATP Hydrolysis: release energy for endergonic reactions    NADH   ● Electrons are also released; another form of energy; beneficial to capture and use  in other reactions  ● An electron carrier  ● Two forms; one releases and forms NADH and one     Energy for Cellular Work  ● Comes from various compounds.  ● Fats, carbs, and proteins can be metabolized  ● Complete Glucose metabolism Formula:  C​ H​ O​  + 6O​ →       6CO​  + 6H​ O + chemical and heat energy  6​ 12​ 6​ 2         ​ 2​ 2​ ● Heat energy is necessary because we lose energy.  ● Performed over many steps    Glycolysis  ● Sugar splitting  ● 2 PArts:   ■ Glucose activation: Prime sugar to split, invest ATP energy  ■ Energy Harvest: Rearrange molecules   ● End product: Pyruvate  ● 10 steps      What follows Glycolysis  ● If oxygen is present, then cellular respirations occurs in the mitochondria  ● If oxygen is absent, an anaerobic pathway will follow.    Anaerobic Metabolism  ● Fermentation  ● Alcohol fermentation  ● Lactic Acid Fermentation    LActic Acid Fermentation:  ● Animal cell muscle: If there's not enough oxygen present; a waste product that  needs to be removed from your body; accumulation causes discomfort in muscles  ● Bacteria: Responsible for producing yogurt    Ethanol Fermentation  ● Pyruvic Acid: Goes through two steps to create Acetaldehyde; ethanol waste  produced will use electron and hydrogen to create NADH and NAD+  ● Yeast: why bread rises  ● Brewing industry: Fermenting sugars   ● Goal is to get NAD and NADH products    Anaerobic Cellular Respiration  ● Final electron acceptor: An inorganic molecule
