Shivering was said to be a sign of fright o Every country in Europe invades France Robespierre o Head Jakobis o Forms a 12-man committee of public safety o Mission was seek and kill people against the revolution o Continues to kill people even after others have stopped and told him to stop Tells half the Jakobis they’re against the Revolution Have a meeting with the Jakobis in 1794 Jakobis seeked to kill Robespierre Robespierre hides in his office Mob catches him Robespierre tries to kill himself, ends up shooting his ear instead He is executed by the mom Reign of Terror ends o Everyone is welcomed back to France White Terror o Guys who come back, seek and kill the Jakobis New Constitution o `1794 o France is America o Don’t have one president, but 5 Called “The Directory” Napoleon o Mighty nobleman from Corsika o Had 2 choices Go into the church Go into the army o 1794 low ranking in the army o Marries well to Josephine Her bestfriends are “The Directory” (5 presidents) o Hired by the directory to be their bodyguard Royalist Mob o Have their revolution in 1794 o Wanted to kill the Directory o Napoleon kills them instead 1794-1815 o France is at war the entire time o Napoleon is general Fought 7 wars Has one enemy he cant defeat Great Britain Goes to beat Great Britain Invades Egypt (Britain trades with Egypt) Declares war on the English Economy Napoleon wins 1798 Battle of The Nile o Napoleon boat gets sunk in Egypt o Napoleon loses battle to Admiral Nelson o Napoleon goes home and declares himself Emperor 1805 o Napoleon’s greatest defeat Combined all the navies of Europe together Mission was to go to England and destroy them Admiral Nelson finds their ships off the coast of Spain (Cape Trafalgar) He was out outnumbered 5 to 1 Nelson gets shot at the top plank and dies on the bottom, Britain wins Austerlitz o Russian and Austrians vs the French o Napoleon was outnumbered and had a weak point o Napoleon surrounded the Austrians and Russians He destroys them and make them surrender the war o The battle becomes the Holy grail of warfare o Napoleon army was more modern Modernity vs premodernity Warfare vs battle o Strategy What your nation wants to do in war o Tactics How you use your troops in battle o Great tactics have never fixed a broken strategy 1809 Continental System o Napoleon tells Europe they couldn’t trade with Britain o Plans backfired Britain has everything o A nation called Spain leaves the continental system o Napoleon invades Spain, searching for an army to destroy Instead fights a nation, no army 50,000 troops vs 22 million people Redefined the rules of warfare o 1812 Russia leaves the continental system Napoleon takes grand army (600,000 troops) and invades Russia Russia has weather and size Russia gets out of the way, Napoleon travels through the nation getting hungrier and hungrier Napoleon reaches Moscow in October He retreats, army is freezing and starving French army freezes to death on the way back home. Only 10,000 makes it out 1813 o Napoleon loses his first battle Battle of Leipzig o Gives up throne o Kings of Europe captures him, exile him to Elbe Small city off the coast of Italy o Napoleon invades France with his small number of troops o Louis 18 sends his army to defeat Napoleon o Napoleon gets them to surrender Battle of Waterluke o Napoleon gets defeated o Exiled to St Helena were he’s a prisoner
