Math 206 Fall 2016 Project 1 Generated For: bmao12 Covers: This project covers up through and including Chapter 8 of the tutorial. What to Submit: For this project you will need to create and upload a single script m-▯le called matlab1.m (all lower case!). This ▯le should do all of the things requested in the problems below in the order speci▯ed. Grading Method: Grading for this course is via an automated grading system which checks both that your answers are correct and that you used the correct method of obtaining them. This is why it is important to assign your answers to the correct variable names and use the methods speci▯ed. Use of comments (if you know how to use them) is ▯ne - comments are ignored by the grading system. If there are any unexpected errors or the ▯le is incorrectly named (hence can’t be found) then the project will automatically earn a grade of 0 so make sure you run your m-▯le through Matlab and check the output before submitting! Be very careful about making sure that any necessary symbolic variables are de▯ned in your code. The assumption should be that we will run your m-▯le through a clear matlab process. Final Warning: When you test your script m-▯le, type the following in Matlab: >> clear all >> matlab1 Alternatively type clear all in Matlab and then use the run button in the project editor. Whatever you do, don’t put clear all inside the actual m-▯le though, it will be removed before grading because it trashes the grading software. This will make sure that you’ve cleared out any residual de▯ned variables and it will make sure that your code is not going to error. You have been warned! 1. This problem is here to remind you to make sure you syms any variables you need. You can do it ▯rst, or later when you need them, but don’t forget! 2. Evaluate sin(28). All angles should be treated as radians. Assign to p2. [3 pts] Answer: p2=sin(28) 3. Evaluate cos(cos(20)). All angles should be treated as radians. Assign to p3. [3 pts] 4. Evaluate cos(cos(39)). All angles should be treated as degrees. Assign to p4. [3 pts] ▯1 5. Evaluate tan (sin(39)). All angles should be treated as degrees. Assign to p5. [3 pts] 6. Calculate log231 + log 80. You might need a change of base or two. Assign to p6. [4 pts] 7. Use solve to solve 2x + 4 = 34. Assign to p7. [3 pts] 2 3 4 2 3 4 8. Use solve to solve 1 ▯ 6x + 3x ▯ 6x = 1 ▯ 6x ▯ 4x ▯ 2x . Assign to p8. [4 pts] 9. A surveyer standing at point A sights two targets, one at B and one at C. He measures that target [5 pts] B is 58 yards away, target C is 386 yards away and the angle between them is 39 degrees. Use solve and the Law of Cosines to ▯nd the distance between B and C. Assign to p9. Note: Using solve applied directly to the LOC will yield both a positive and negative solution - that’s ▯ne, please leave both! ▯ ▯ ▯ ▯ ▯▯▯▯ ▯ ▯ ▯ ▯ ▯▯▯▯ 10. Use simplify to simplify 4 2 + 4 ▯ 3 + 3 + 6 ▯ 5 2 . Assign to p10. [4 pts] t t 11. Use solve to solve the following system of equations: [6 pts] xy ▯ 8x = 8 y ▯ 4x = 2 Assign to p11. p 12. Assign to p25. [4 pts] 26. Use solve to solve g(h(x)) = h(g(x)). Assign to p26. [4 pts] 27. Use fzero to approximate an x-intercept of y = x+ cos ▯ x ▯ 3 + e (x=4▯3) ▯ 3 near x = 8. Assign to [5 pts] 4 4 p27. 28. Use fzero to approximate the largest x-intercept of the function y = cosx + 0:5(1:9 ). Use a nearby [7 pts] sensible integer value of your choice. Find this nearby sensible integer however you wish, how you ▯nd it is not part of the assignment. Assign to p28.
