The department of communications, marketing, advertisements, and PR LAW VS. MORALITY Morality -‐ it asks us: “Are we living up to the core assumptions of the world and what people believe we should follow?” -‐ “Can we make people better?” Law -‐ it asks us: “can we fix what people are doing wrong?” -‐ it asks for can we protect people from doing bad? -‐ It always does the minimum to make someone not do something bad ETHICS OF DOING VS ETHICS OF BEING Ethics of Doing Right Action and Wrong Actions o Refers to the act o Intentions § Ex. When someone does something stupid but they did it with good intentions and that makes you less mad at the person o Process § Ex. If your parents want to get an A on a test therefore you make a cheat sheet for the test to get that A o Legally § Ex. If you do something illegal, why did you do it? Good reason or bad reason? 3 MAIN TYPES OF ETHICS 1) Deontology -‐ START WITH KNOWING WHATS RIGHT AND APPLY IT, SIMPLY JUST ACT AND DO IT. QUICK EASY -‐ Deon: Duty/Obligation -‐ Where you may find the law portion -‐ Questions asked by Deontology o What is the good? § Determined by asking: “What does the law require” and “what is my duty?” o What is Bad/Sin § Failing to live up to the law/duty § Focuses on the act in itself or the object of the act 2) Teleology -‐ WE KNOW WHERE WE ARE SUPPOSED TO END AND WE HAVE A VISION KNOWING WHERE WE WILL END UP BUT YOU TAKE DERVERSIONS AND YOU THINK ABOUT IT A LITTLE BEFORE ACTING -‐ Telos: End of goal o Determined by asking: “What is the good? “ o What is the bad/sin § Focusing on the INTENTION of the act o Types: § Virtue Ethics • Who am I trying to be? § Unitarianism • What will produce the greatest happiness 3) Responsibility -‐ THERE IS ALWAYS A RIGHT ANSWER BUT IT DEPENDS ON WHO IS AROUND YOU AND YOU START ASKING QUESTIONS. MOST OPTIONS AND HARDEST TO DEFINE AND COME TO A CONCLUSION. o Determined by: What is the good & WHAT IS HAPPENING o Bad or sin? § Failing to respond to the others and their needs o Focuses on circumstances of the act o Ex. Speeding or not to speed and reasonability does make you think, “will it hurt me? Will it harm people around me?”
