Caroline Rhomberg (010723084) Honors Research Experience Dr. Cassady August 25 Seminar Summary Not one of us freshmen left the room unmotivated to dive into research after hearing Dr. Heather Nachtmann speak to us about the fundamentals of research, specifically that which takes place at the University of Arkansas. As a professor of industrial engineering, Dr. Nachtmann also presides as the associate dean of research in the college of engineering. Presented in a manner comprehensible to our eager, despite ignorant, minds, she did a wonderful job explaining the who, what, when, where, but most importantly, the why of research. She was a fantastic speaker because of the way she explained research from the grassroots level; the freshmen audience is new to the subject, so this was advantageous in order to follow her. She began by explaining the multiple components in the “backstage” of a research project. These include the project leader, who keeps the team persevering toward the goal; the team of people, each contributing a different expertise; the timeline of events to ensure timely progress; the scope of work (problem statement, motivation, methodological approach, intellectual contribution, and deliverables); and finally the budget, which includes a justification for funds, or what the research project will result in. Next she discussed the trends in the College of Engineering at the U of A, as they pertain to research. According to statistics of last year, research funding accounted for forty-one percent of the college’s revenue. Also in recent years there has been a sixty-six percent increase due to a ten-million dollar grant to study cyber security and energy. Although research projects are frequently a combination of more than one strand, at the U of A there are five main research strands: electronics, energy, healthcare systems, nanomaterials science, and transportation/logistics. Dr. Nachtmann’s final words on the roles of engineering faculty members were the most enlightening. The three main roles are to teach, research, and serve the community. Still battling whether to pursue STEM education or engineering, it became apparent that engineering faculty members do both simultaneously. For one who is passionate about both, there seems no better solution than to become an engineering faculty member.
