What we see in the sky depends on time of the year/day. The sun follows a path in the sky called Ecliptic.  Plane of earth's orbit. The tilt of the ecliptic plane with the equator is what causes the seasons. Equinox mean equal night. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOON 1. Moon goes through a cycle of phases --> Synodic Month (29.5 day) 2. Rises in the East, Sets in the West. 3. Moves East with respect to the stars. (Slow) ½°/ 1 hour 4. Same side of the moon always faces us. (P-rot = P- orb) Moon light is reflected sunlight: Sidereal Month (27.3 Days) Lunar Eclipse:  Moon is in the earth's Umbra (Shadow) only on full moons. Solar Eclipse:  Only at new moons. In front of the sun. For an eclipse to happen the moon has to cross the ecliptic plane on a new or full moon. NEXT TOTAL SOLAR ELIPSE: August 21, 2017
