Russell: “Appearance and Reality”  The table: looks different at different views o The table is static even though it looks different to people  There are many different perspectives of the table o Point: YOU can’t really know it is  Not sure if the table exists or not  Metaphysical: the study of abstract concepts  Being, knowing, substance, cause  The thing may exist o Argument From Change:  (1) the apparent table changes overtime  (2) the “real” table is unchangeable  (3) Therefore, the apparent table is not the real table o Sense-data: data collected through observation of the world using the senses  Mental qualities: only exist in the mind/ when sensing  Directly or immediately known  Exists only while perceived o Question:  Given that all we have is sense-data, does the external world exist?  If so, what can we know? o No: disposition o IDK: Skepticism o Yes: Common Sense Realism o Argument form Similarity:  (1) Different people have similar sense data  (2) Similar sense data are usually caused by the same physical objects  (3) Physical objects exists  Circular Argument  Cannot assume what they assume is different from the argument o Argument from Simplicity:  (1) There are complex patterns in my sense data  (2) The simplest explanation for these patterns is that physical objects exist  (3) Simpler explanations are more likely to be true  (4) Physical objects exist  (4) It is most likely that physical objects exist  Ability to grasp or understand does not mean simple  Simple: has very little parts o A to B real quick
