Perspectives: Comparative Cultures Week 3 & 4 Notes Kubla Kimmel: The War Against Boys – the author takes a stance on how toxic our societies’ ideal of what “masculinity” should be, and advocates that it is only negatively effecting the boys themselves and ultimately subtracting from society. By covering up true feelings, boys are not taught to cope with their feelings of lonliness or depression, which leads to a negative mental state of wellbeing. This issue causes boys to suffer from depression, suicide (4x more likely than female counterpart), attention deficit disorder (6x more likely than female counter part), and overall lackluster academic performance in areas in which they could be preforming better. Cited Works: • Real Boys – William Pollock – explored the factors that inhibit the full psychological development of boys. Was written by a doctor with over 20 years of compiled observations. • Raising Cain – Michael Thompson – also titled “Protecting the emotional life of boys”, destructive emotional training Little Miss Sunshine In-Class Film Excerpts from this film were watched in- class in order to reveal how societies’ sexual standards prevail in a pre-adolescent fashion show. We watch the older brother and father become verbally upset and disturbed as they witness the other contestants are judged for their ‘femininity’, but what is actually plain ‘sexuality’. Every contestant in the swimsuit competition is seen in a two-piece bikini with a full face of make-up. According to her older brother, “This place is fucked”! The camera shows scenes of delighted smiles from the judge’s, and audiences, as the little over-eroticized girls walk out on stage half-naked to be subject to false beauty standards, and subconscious sexualization, that they are not aware of.
