    Life, Energy and Homeostasis​ 8/17/16   Life Definition:   ● Usually defined by characteristics (problematic)  ○ Problems because life is a gradation  ● Energy = life  ● Life isn’t defined  ○ Humans try to define life with list of characteristics, but unsuccessful because  differences between resources and no definite # of traits required    Dr. L’s definition of life­ Homeostasis  ● Homeostasis:​ maintain stable environment in a cell and different from external  environment  ● To maintain homeostasis, life needs energy:  ○ Spend energy to maintain temp, salt/water balance, glucose balance, expel waste,  build body, reproduce…  ○ Must make energy before being spent (eating or photosynthesis)  ■ All energy comes from the sun *****  ○ Making/ spending energy = metabolism  ● Run out of energy = death  ● Fats/ oils are stored energy    Metabolism:​ spending energy to maintain homeostasis (chemical reactions breaking/ building  molecules)  ● Uses proteins  ● High metabolism = benefit the organism  ○ Move or grow faster  ● High metabolism = hurt the organism  ○ Few resources = death  ○ Spend less = survive longer  ● Slow metabolism = low energy requirements        How Science Works: Asking Questions and Finding Answers ​8/19/16  How We Make Decisions  1. Beliefs (faith, trust, loyalty)  2. Accept what others tell you  a. Experts vs non­ experts  3. Discuss and Reason  a. Agree upon facts (premises), logically explain interpretations (conclusions)  4. M​easureable (technology; direct/ indirect)    ­ Verifiable: Evidence that it’s true  ­ Falsifiable: Evidence that it’s false    “Pseudoscience”:​ question is ​not​ falsifiable, observable, repeatable, measurable  ● Ex: “intelligent design”, astrology, ghosts    How to Write Hypothesis  ● Hypothesis: “informed prediction” (If condition, then measurement)  ● “If” Statement:   ○ Specific and clear “cause”  ○ Defined treatment  ● “Then statement”:  ○ Measureable “effect”  ○ Precise  ○ Significant/ important  ● Ex Hypothesis: “If I floss my teeth every day, then there will be fewer bacterial colonies  growing on a nutrient plate”.
