PSY-102 Chapter 3: Sensation and Perception Sensation o Physical response requiring the activation of sense organs by a source of energy Perception o Sorting out, interpreting, analyzing, and integrating of stimuli by sense of organs and brains Psychophysics o Study of relationship between physical aspects of stimuli and psychological experience with them Central role in developing of field of psychology Absolute Threshold o Smallest intensity of a stimulus that must be present for it be detected Difference Threshold o Smallest level of added/reduced stimulation required to sense a change in stimulation has occurred Weber’s Law o Just noticeable difference is a constant proportion to the intensity of an initial stimulus (rather than a constant amount) Color Blindness o Red-Green: objects appear yellow o Yellow-Blue: unable to tell the difference between both o No color Olfactory Cells (smell) o Molecules enter nasal passages and pass over olfactory cells, responses sent to brain, where they are combined into recognition of a particular smell Gustation (taste) o Sweet, sour, salty, bitter (possible fifth sense- Umami) o Taste buds replaced every 10 days 2
