Energy Mix for Electrical Power Jessica Rhodes August 27, 2016 Abstract Nuclear power is an expanding industry used for producing clean en- ergy. There are many applications throughout the United States that re- quire and demand electricity for operational usage. As nuclear engineers, it must be understood what percentage of electrical power is nuclear en- ergy. 1 Introduction Electricity is a source of energy used in various ways for everyday life; however, this type of energy is only considered secondary. Secondary energy sources are the resulting mixtures of primary sources. There are 3 types of primary sources used to produce electrical power in the US and the world, each energy as listed: fossil energy, nuclear energy and other renewable energy. After mixing these sources, the output energy is then converted into the electricity being supplied to homes and businesses. 1.1 Energy Mix Contributions Listed in the table below are the di▯erent energy sources and their corresponding percentages to the overall energy mix used to support electrical power, according to data retrieved from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). After years of production, nuclear still falls below half the amount of energy required to support the US. Nuclear energy only provides the world with 20 percent of its energy, but not entirely to electricity. It is said to be 6 percent used for supplying the world’s energy and 13-14 for the world’s electricity. Improvements and advancements in the industry will help expansion of nuclear power production.
