Chapter 4 Notes – People and Play  Play – Voluntary spontaneous, joyful, not serious, necessary  Characteristics of play for kids o Intrinsically motivated o Actively engaging o Fun o Imaginative o Not serious  Play is critical for childhood development o Cooperation o Social relationships o Consensus building o Learning o Compromise o Dexterity  Play happens in every culture  Play can be unorganized or structured  Play can be done individually or with groups  Play is a form of creative expression  Physiological explanations of play o Initially posited that play was caused by biological and genetic predispositions o Later theories described innate needs and drives that could be net by play  Sociological explanations of play o Theories suggested that play was integral in maintaining the structures and values of a society  Contemporary explanations of play o Play is necessary for human development, contributes to well-being, and is a reflection of their self-perception and culture  Theory – an idea or set of ideas that is intended to explain facts or events  Play theories – developed over a century, may be in fields like psychology, sociology, and anthropology  Surplus energy theory – play occurs as a result of excess energy  Recreation theory – play acts as a way to rejuvenate the individual  Pre-exercise theory – play is used as a mean to practice adult roles  Recapitulation theory – through play children recreate the lives of their ancestors  Relaxation theory – play is used to unwind  Catharsis theory – play is used as a safe way to address emotions, thoughts, and feelings  Compensation theory – play allows for an individual to “Make up” for unpleasant or unavailable experiences  Developmental theory – play in children is based on their cognitive and social abilities based on their age  Achievement – motivation theory – play involves the desire to strive and excel  Optimal arousal theory – when individuals become bored the seek play
