Plato’s Phaedo Class Notes         September 21, 2016  In Plato’s Phaedo dialogue Socrates final moments and thoughts are discussed. In Socrates final  moments he covered four major theories. 1.) Theory of Forms­ the theory of forms deals with metaphysics. Metaphysics being the  study of what exist. Phaedo breaks the theory of forms into two parts. a.) The idea of realism, Realism­ Universals are real, meaning there is one thing that a  group has in common that makes them that group, everyone in that group has  common properties.  Forms are… ­ Intelligible  ­ Unchangeable  ­ Independent  b.) Forms explain common properties. 2.) Theory of Recollection­ Learning is a recollection of knowledge acquired before birth.  The soul existed before birth. 3.) Substance Dualism­ The soul/ mind and the body are different types of things.  4.) Immortality of the soul­ The soul is immortal.
