Monday, September 12, 2016 psych *class rules * - quiz next class - quizzes are online, open book, i-learn - most of the test questions are NOT in the book, they will come from the class - read syllabus - prefers telephone or talking in person. not a fan of emails . - phones off :) WRITE GOOD NOTES. (recommend cornell) - summarize in the end * - write it all down.. even if you know it . those turn out to be the BEST notes - put enough info in the topic. not a snippet - discourage key words-puts you in flashcard mentality - take sweetheart notes (if they cant make it to class what kind of notes would you take?) - *when studying , get a blank sheet of paper and write down everything you know. DO NOT GET YOUR NOTES - once you write everything you know , THEN you pull out your notes TESTING when testing , highlight what you got wrong to practice what you don't know. study what you haven't learned could do blank sheet before the test 1 Monday, September 12, 2016 studying going to a study group . do your blank sheet before you go. figure out what you don't understand ************************************************************************************************* GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY definition: scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of humans and animals - study of: (science) *test creation - - behavior psychometrician * - mental process - animals - humans ANIMAL STUDY - understand animal life . - we sometimes treat our animals like humans. - animals react of instincts. thats why we study them , to be able to accept it and interact with them better ACCURATELY - simpler model - general control - readily available - cost: much less expensive - ethics: experiments, might cause in death. / in psychology animals are usually treated better than those pets at home. most expensive room is the animal room . to reach ethical level - genetics: short life span, when experimenting its faster to get an outcome. * thytamin: for pregnant woman , didn't do anything to animals but deformed humans . 2 Monday, September 12, 2016 GOALS OF PSYCHOLOGY - description ~ must do it adequately and specific . what is it EXACTLY . - understanding ~ must know what you it is and know how it works - predicting ~ what will happen - controlling ~ where will you find a psychologist ? • school ask good questions • industrial settings about treatment . • medical facilites • professors • counseling prisons • laboratories • • military bases forensic psychology is when psychology ties with the legal system CSI CLINICAL COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGY ARE NOT THE SAME THING counseling psychologists: every day things clinical psychologists: any mental problem doctor means teacher. used to be physician psychologists vs psychiatrists • “drugs” • drugs • Ph.D (6 years at the • MD (3 more years ) minimum . average 10) • medical model • biopsychosocial model • research training 3 Monday, September 12, 2016 can prescribe drugs without going to medical school *osteopaths *dentists *nurse practicians *PA *optometrists psychologists (2 year masters degree in psychopharmacology to prescribe drugs) over 20 years they've never had a malfunction/ law suit status for drug prescription. FREUD WAS A PSYCHIATRIST - created therapy world war I -psychologists did research -psychiatrists were doing therapy there wasn't enough psychiatrists to give therapy so psychologists asked them to teach them and help them give them therapy (since that day theres been a shortage of psychiatrists) [2-300 dollar difference] -psychologists researched therapy and made it better and became the gurus of therapy who prescribes drugs for mental illness? family doctors/ general practicians why? not enough psychiatrists to go around 4 Monday, September 12, 2016 “it is a good thing for tyrants that people do not think for themselves” “it is as important to know how to think as it is to know the content of a course” observational research is complete hands off. diane fosche: studied gorillas 5
