College Writing Lynda Barry Repetitive phrase: “sound turned off”,  Barry starts off with a personal anecdote that explains her house falling into economic debt,  which occupied the minds of her parents. Because of this, they do not pay attention to their  children, leaving them neglected and lost. They depend on the comfort and love given by their  teachers in schools to support them.  Barry stresses that making budget cuts from governmentsupported schools will not only take a  toll on how much teachers are paid, but also the kind of education students are getting.  Without a good education, it is harder for students to find opportunities in their future.  No matter what family issue they are a victim of, schools are what build the character and  purpose in students. If the system is ineffective or broken, students would not be educated  enough to receive a paying job, thus giving them financial instability and starting the cycle up  again. Brent Staples He writes in an essaylike format, using many references to support the depth of the issue that  schools are increasingly becoming more of a business rather than an education system. His  sentences are very intellectually written. He talked to many different professors from renowned  universities around the country, gaining information about such colleges that continue to press  debt into students’ homes as a result of the decreasing number of college attendees thus  lowering their income rates.  As a result of students having to pay tens of thousands of dollars for tuition, students would do  anything to receive As in their courses. To pay so much money to only receive average grades  would be devastating, especially if they do not meet the requirements for their desired degree.  Thus, teachers practically ‘hand out’ As to students merely to keep from being the butt end of a  lawsuit or complication because of the amount of money students spend on the course.
